Description

Eight weeks. One island. Twenty-four lessons that actually connect.

Most unit studies hand you a stack of topics. This one tells a single story.

Week 1 ends on a question: how can one place get 120 inches of rain in one spot and 20 inches in another, less than 90 miles apart? Week 1 Day 2 answers it, and that answer explains most of what the island does. The Taíno words your children learn in Week 3 come back in Week 4, when they find out what happened to the people who spoke them. The geography that made Borikén a good home in Week 1 is the same geography that made it a prize worth taking in Week 4. By Week 8 the children are not reciting facts about Puerto Rico. They are holding one continuous argument about how a place gets made.

What’s inside

  • Week 1 · Geography & Geology. Where the island sits, what it is made of, and why rainwater carved the bowl that held the Arecibo Observatory.
  • Week 2 · Living Systems. The coquí, El Yunque, and the plants and animals that live here and nowhere else.
  • Week 3 · The Taíno. Borikén before 1493: villages, language, food, and the words still on the map.
  • Week 4 · When Worlds Collide. Encounter, the encomienda, the 1511 rebellion, and the African heritage at the center of Puerto Rican culture.
  • Week 5 · Art, Culture & Folklore. Bomba, plena, the Vejigante, and the making of a distinctly Puerto Rican voice.
  • Week 6 · Economy, Resources & Regions. How the island earns its living, region by region.
  • Week 7 · Government, Politics & Citizenship. Commonwealth status, citizenship, and the questions that remain open.
  • Week 8 · Caring, Creating & Carrying Puerto Rico Forward. What the next generation inherits, and what they do with it.

What you get in every lesson

A teacher read-aloud script written to be read exactly as printed, with the pronunciation built into the sentences so nobody has to guess. Key vocabulary with a pronunciation guide. At least two Pause & Think moments, which are questions without tidy answers, meant to be sat with rather than solved. Reflection questions with a full answer key for teacher use. A hands-on activity with a materials list and step-by-step instructions. Differentiation for grades 4 to 5 and 6 to 8, plus optional challenge extensions. Standards alignment to NGSS, Common Core ELA, and NCSS/C3.

Plus printable maps and worksheets, cut-and-fold vocabulary flashcards, and a Say It Out Loud pronunciation poster for each week.

The practical details

360 pages across eight PDF files, one per week. Grades 4 to 8. Three lessons per week, 45 to 75 minutes each. Open and go: read the script, gather the materials listed, teach. No prep course, no teacher’s manual to study first.

Instant download after purchase. Yours to keep and reprint for your own family, with no expiry.

A note on the hard weeks

Week 4 covers forced labor, armed rebellion, the collapse of the Taíno population, and the enslavement of African people. It states what happened plainly, without euphemism and without graphic detail, because children of this age can hold difficult truths when an adult tells them steadily. Those lessons carry a teacher note and end deliberately on survival and legacy rather than on loss. Read them through before you teach them.
